WHAT IS A COMPETITION LICENCE?

Should you wish to compete in a Motorsport Ireland event you will need a competition licence. Licences are broken down by discipline so if you wish to compete in Rallycross, for example, you will need a Speed licence. Unless you are a junior (under the age of 16) you will be applying for a National B licence in most cases. Over time, as you build up experience and event finishes, you can upgrade your licence to higher grades allowing you to drive more powerful cars and compete in more prestigious events. More licence information can be found in the How to Compete section of the website.

FIRST-TIME COMPETITION LICENCE

If you do not hold and have never held a competition licence, you can apply for a first-time licence.Your first time-licence is at a discounted rate if you are a member of an affiliated motor club, and you will keep your licence number for life. First-time licences last for 12 months from the date of issue, and after it expires, you can then renew your licence. Almost all First-Time licences require the submission of a medical certificate (part of the application form) signed off by a qualified doctor who practices in either Ireland or the UK. If you are unsure about if you require a medical or not, please contact Motorsport Ireland. In certain disciplines such as Stage Rallies, Navigation Trials and Endurance Trials, a driver and a navigator are required. Navigators must also hold a valid competition licence.

Over time, as you build up experience and event finishes, you can upgrade your licence to higher grades allowing you to drive more powerful cars and compete in more prestigious events.

INTRODUCTION TO MOTORSPORT STARTER PACK

If you wish to drive in a Stage Rally or a Race however, there is one other step you must complete before applying for your Competition Licence . Both of these disciplines require the driver to undertake an Introduction to Motorsport Course (IMC) to prove their competency behind the wheel and receive instruction on the rules and regulations governing that discipline, information on licensing and insurance. If this is what you would like to do you must purchase an IMC Starter Pack from Motorsport Ireland which costs €10. This pack will include all the information necessary for you to book your IMC course for either discipline.

COMPETITION LICENCE RENEWAL

If you currently hold or previously held a Competition Licence, you can simply renew your licence.  Please note that if you hold an International grade licence in any category and let it lapse for more than six years, you will lose you International grade, will drop down to National A and will have to upgrade again.
